Drooling over Draper, Don that is!

Please excuse me while I wipe the drool from my chin! I just finished reading a blog article at eyeondesign.aiga.org about Mad Med – how designers are hooked on it and how we gobble up the visual candy being served on every level from the hidden gems in the background to the opening graphics. I'm no exception, just thinking about the final season opener has me salivating.

Honestly, I can't think of a single designer friend who doesn't watch this show! I had to explain to my Dad that I can't be at Easter dinner in LA on Sunday because I'm worried I won't get home in time to watch Mad Men. So I got to wondering... why are we all drawn to this show like a fly to honey? Maybe it's because we're desperate for relief. For a myriad of reasons, I'm not a huge TV watcher, but I do have a few shows I like to tune into on a regular basis. Mad Men, of course, and The Walking Dead. The rest of the shows I watch on-demand – no commercials! When we do watch shows with commercial breaks, my husband usually glances over after each one to check my reaction. Why? Because there's always a reaction. And it's usually something like... "They paid for that?"

Being a visual person in the world can be both amazing and horrifying. Seriously, when we flip through a magazine, open the mail, read a menu, or walk down the street, we have to filter out all the bad design and visual chaos around us. I think the reason designers love this show isn't just because the characters are interesting or the story line is compelling... it's the attention to the visual details – the sweet, sweet nectar we all crave. I also love the creative history and being reminded of how far we have come as a profession, but also how much we're still the same.

I have mixed emotions about the final season. On one hand I'm excited to watch, on the other hand I hate to see it end. Oh, the bitter sweet irony of it all!

Have a Pawsitively Tail Waggin’ Good Day!
